What is "wabi-sabi"?

The *Sekimori-ishi* (barrier stone) is said to have been devised by the tea master Sen no Rikyu. These stones were placed at forks in the paths—such as stepping stones or paved walkways—within tea gardens. Because they signaled to visitors that they should refrain from proceeding further, they came to be known as "stones that guard the checkpoint."
